Server Administration - Shared Folders

In a Nutshell - CIW Course Section 3, Part A2, Chapter 6

Shared Folders Snap-In

Most of is will be familiar with shared folders by now, but are you aware that the Shared Folders MMC Snap-In can centralise the administration of all shares on the computer. I know I wasn't, I hade been blissfully managing my shares individually from within My Computer.

Shared Folders

Shared Folders does not appear to be a snap-in in it's own right, it is part of the Computer Management Snap-In.

Shares Folder

This contains a list of all the shared folders on the local machine. Right-click the Shares folder and select New File Share to create a new share, right-click an individual share in the right-pane and click Stop Sharing to remove the share.

Any share with a name ending with the dollar symbol is a system share, and while you may stop the sharing of these, it will be temporary, as the share will reappear when the system is restarted.

Sessions

This folder shows the users currently connected to any of the shares and includes details on which computer they are connected from and how long they have been connected.

Open Files

Shows which files in the shares are opened and by whom.

The columns detailed are the following:
