WebTrends Log Analyser

In a Nutshell - CIW Course Section 3, Part B3, Chapter 4

WebTrends Installation

The course notes show several nice screenshots of the installation of WebTrends V6.5. If you download an evaluation of WebTrends you will get the current version, which when I downloaded it, Jan 2006. was V7.5b. The version I downloaded was WebTrends Professional Edition. The following screenshots are from this edition.

WebTrends License Key

The first thing you are required to provide, is the license key, which will have been emailed to you when you registered for the evaluation. It should be noted that WebTrends suggest that the Log Analyser is best installed on a workstation rather than a Windows NT or Windows 2000 server.

They further suggest that it should not be installed on the server that is the Web server, i.e. the server running IIS.

WebTrends Install Options

Being the typical devil's advocate, I installed it on the Windows 2000 server that is running IIS, which it didn't complain about. I think it's more a question of performance issues.

WebTresnds Database Initialisation

The above screen was the penultimate screen during installation, I didn't include the last one as there isn't the space here to have too many screenshots. Finally, you should restart IIS to allow WebTrends to read the log files. Quite how this works if you installed to a diiferent machine, I'm not sure. As a footnote, while I didn't see it in the pre-requisites, you will need Microsoft Excel installed to allow WebTrends to produce it's reports.

Creating Profiles

When you first run WebTrends 7.5b Professional it requires you to re-input the license key and log on using the username and password you specified during installation. You will be presented with a Web style interface

WebTrends Administration Console

As you will see, I have selected "Reports & Profiles" and having clicked on "New Profile" have created a profile named Test2. The profile asks for the location of the log files which in Windows 2000 is c:\winnt\system32\logfiles\w3svc1\.

The profile is what identifies the location of the data and, I assume, will form the basis of any reports you wish to produce.

Generating Reports

The image below is reduced by quite a large percentage as it is a large screen. It shows one of the many report templates available within WebTrends 7.5b

WebTrends Report Template

Each of these templates can be modified so that your report contains only the data and views that you require. It appears to be immensely flexible but, I'll be honest, I couldn't get it to work and I didn't have the time to figure it out.
