Server Administration - Servers
In a Nutshell - CIW Course Section 3, Part B2
This covers a number of different server types which you may come across as a Web Manager. Many of these have been mentioned earlier in the course, but now we look at them in a little more detail.
The section on email servers is unexpected, in so much as it is devoted to a software package called MDaemon. I would have expected something more mainstream like Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Notes. When I first saw the name: MDaemon, I assumed this was a Unix/Linux package, from the daemon reference, but it is a Windows package. It looks like a fairly comprehensive piece of software, but not in the same league as Microsoft Exchange, which is the one I am familiar with.
Chapter Headings
As I have done with the other sections, the navigation links, to the left, are somewhat abbreviated so I have included the full chapter titles here:
- Chapter 1 - Web Applications
- Chapter 2 - Perl and e-Commerce Web Servers
- Chapter 3 - Web Servers and Gateways
- Chapter 4 - Streaming Media Server
- Chapter 5 - Configuring a News Server
- Chapter 6 - E-mail Server Essentials
- Chapter 7 - Installing E-mail Servers
- Chapter 8 - Advanced MDaemon Configuration
I did install MDaemon but was reluctant to try and configure it for use on my network and out through the firewall. It just might have played havoc with my existing Exchange installation.
